I was impressed with your determination to develop bilingualism in your children. Many years ago, when I was teaching at Staten Island Community College, one of our faculty members in the Dept of Mod Lang spoke only German to his youngster and had done so for several years. The result was that the child (then aged 7) was quite bilingual and did not seem to be bothered by the fact that if he wanted to communicate with his father, he had to do so in German. What was interesting, though, was that when I spoke German to the lad, he replied in English. A strange evening, but an interesting one.

In my case, I had been brought up bilingual (French/English), since my Dad was a Mining Engineer working in a small town in north Quebec during my years of 2 to 7. My mother would take me shopping since she was unable to speak French. Whenw e moved to Toronto, I lost vocabulary but not pronunciation skills. But when I entered university, the vocabulary slowly returned while the pronunciation improved in the language lab.

And quite possibly that early training in bilingualism is why I have been able to learn new languages with some facility. I lived and worked in Stockholm when I was in my thirties and reached a point and vocabulary and pronunciation facility where I could book a room at a hotel and not be asked for my passport until the clerk noted my Canadian citizenship on the booking form.

My French and Swedish were learned "in situ" as it were while my Spanish was learned in the classroom. I find that I do have to do some thinking when speaking Spanish to use the correct tenses and persons whereas in French and Swedish the use of proper endings comes almost automatically.

While I was enrolled in Modern Lang & Lit at the U of Toronto, we were required to master two additional languages besides the basic French. I selected Russian and Spanish. After my second year, we were to select the two languages we wished to continue studying. I opted for French and Spanish. My Russian nowadays is virtually non-existent, alas.

I think your decision of imbuing your children with the knowledge of more than one language is excellent. The secret comes in consistency. If you establish the principal that one of you speaks only in Spanish to the children, they will quickly catch on to the rules of the game of communications. To increse their vocabulary you will have to devote a daily session introducing new vocabulary since their reading skill will be pretty skimpy for a few years. Of course, the ideal situation would be to move to a Central or South American country or to Spain for three years or more until they become quite fluent.

We plan to take our children to Spain for 3-4 months in 1998. Not quite the 3+ years recommended by Mr. Erickson, but a considerable stretch of times. After that time their grandmother will come to live with us. She speaks very little English, so they will have increased opportunity to speak with someone other than their mother in Spanish.

Yo estaba impresionado con su determinación para desarrollar a sus niños para ser bilingües. Hace muchos años, cuando enseñaba en el colegio de Comunidad de Staten Island, uno de nuestros miembros de facultad en el departamento de Mod Lang solamente hablaba a su niño en Alemán y llevaba bastante años haciendo lo. El resultado fue el niño (entonces tenia 7 años) era bastante bilingüe y no se preocupaba de qué si quería hablar con su padre, lo tenia qué hacerse lo en Alemán. Lo qué fue interesante, sin embargo, era cuando yo le hablaba en Alemán el chico, me contestaba en Ingles. Una noche rara, pero interesante.

En mi caso, yo había sido criado bilingüe (Francés/Ingles), desde qué mi padre era un Ingeniero para las minas trabajando en un pueblo en el norte de Quebec durante mis 2 a 7 años. Mi madre me llevaba ha hacer compras como ella hablaba el Francés. Cuando nos mudamos a Toronto, perdí mi vocabulario pero no habilidad a la pronunciación. Cuando entre a la universidad poco a poco volvió mi vocabulario mientras mejoré mi pronunciación en el laboratorio de lengua.

Y por cierto el entrenamiento en ser bilingüe es porque he podido aprender idiomas nuevas con algo de facilidad. Viví y trabaje en Stockholm cuando yo estaba en mis treintas y llegué a un punto con mi vocabulario y facilidad a la pronunciación qué podía reservar una habitación en un hotel sin qué me pedirían el pasaporte hasta qué el dependiente notaba mi ciudadanía Canadiense en el libro formulario.

Mi Francés y Sueco fue aprendido en mi situación mientras mi Español fue aprendido en la clase. Veo qué necesito pensar cuando hablo el Español para usar el tenso correcto y personas mientras en Francés y Sueco el termino me viene casi automáticamente. Mientras estaba registrado en la Clase de Lengua y Literatura Moderna en la Universidad de Toronto, nuestro requisito era dominar dos idiomas adicionales además de el Francés básico. Yo escogie Ruso y Español. Después de ni segundo año, teniemos qué seleccionar los dos idiomas qué deseamos continuar estudiar. Yo escogió Francés y Español. Mi Ruso ahora días casi no existe, desafortunadamente.

Pienso qué el imbuir a tres niños con la sabiduría de mas de una idioma es excelente. El secreto viene en tener consistencia. Si estableces el principal de qué uno de ustedes habla solamente en Español a sus niños, pronto se darán cuenta de las reglas del juego de la comunicación. Para aumentar su vocabulario tendrán qué dedicar una sesión diaria para introducir vocabulario nuevo como su conocimiento práctico en leer será escaso para unos años. Claro, la situación ideal seria el mudar a un país en Centro ó Sur América ó a España para tres años ó mas hasta qué sean bastante fluentes.

Pensamos llevar a nuestros hijos a España para 3-4 meses en 1998. No tanto los 3+ años qué recomienda el Señor Erickson, pero un tiempo considerable. Después de ese tiempo su abuela vendrá a vivir con nosotros. Habla muy poco Ingles, así qué eso les dará mas oportunidad el hablar en Español con alguien qué no sea su madre.
