A sign of the times . . .

I walk for exercise. When I walk, I like to walk different places so I can see new things. Recently I walked along a local street that I had not been on except to pass by in the car for some time. One of the things I noticed was this sign of the economic struggle which grips the country. It has an upscale restaurant and one other business, but, other than that, stands empty. Another up-scale mall which has been there for some time had many empty storefronts, waiting, I presume, for better economic times when the affluent will again purchase their goods.

Leading Economic Barometer Up

A recent blog stated:

Vendor performance, the interest rate spread, real money supply, stock prices, consumer expectations, and building permits contributed positively to the index, more than offsetting the negative contributions from weekly hours and initial unemployment claims.

The question becomes more than offsetting for whom? Certainly not for the guy who just got laid off and had to file for unemployment or the gal who had her hours cut so the company could maintain their profit margin. Sure, it's a good thing to know that the economy is getting better for someone, at least. But, trickle down economics is a failed theory, because the benefits never trickle.

Three Teens

Today my boys turn 13. This officially makes them teenagers. My daughter, currently 14, completes the trio. They are great kids, so I'm not worried about them in the least. But, now we have to deal with all the teen stuff with all three of them. Wish us luck.
